Biography

Vera Cekhova is the daughter of German actors agent Ada Cekhova, and granddaughter of the famous actress Olga Cekhova. She started an education as a stage designer but soon switched to the Munich Drama School and studied acting.

In 1959 Vera Cekhova started her theatre career in Berlin under the direction of legendary director Rudolf Noelte, a career that took her to big theatres in, e.g., Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Basel, and Brunswick.

Ms. Cekhova's movie career began in 1956, when she starred in WITWER MIT FÜNF TÖCHTERN (Widower with 5 Daughters). She played in more than 40 screen and tv motion pictures since, e.g. in NOCH MINDERJÄHRIG (Under 18, 1958), BALLERINA E BUON DIO (Angel in a Taxi, 1958, directed by Vittorio de Sica), DAS BROT DER FRÜHEN JAHRE (The Bread of Those Early Years, 1962, German National Film Award), ZEIT DER EMPFINDSAMKEIT (1977, Golden Camera), DESPERADO CITY (1981, directed by her husband Vadim Glovna, Camera d'or in Cannes).

More recently Vera Cekhova has become known as a director of movie portraits. These are: SCHEWARDNADSE (1992), HANS-DIETRICH GENSCHER (1993), KLAUS-MARIA BRANDAUER (1994), KATJA RIEMANN (1995), ARMIN MUELLER-STAHL (1996), ANTHONY QUINN (1997), MICHAEL BALLHAUS (2001) and ROBERT REDFORD (2002). Ms. Chekhova was working on a portrait of ANG LEE and about the MAKHMALBAF FAMILY OF FILMMAKERS. In 2007/08 was created MICHAEL BALLHAUS- EINE REISE DURCH MEIN LEBEN.

She speaks English and French fluently and is proficient in Russian.
